Sports Injuries

Surgical and non-surgical treatment of ligament, meniscus and tendon injuries.

Sports injuries range from simple sprains to complete ligament ruptures. The treatment plan depends not only on the injured structure but also on the athlete's level, the demands of the sport and the timing of the season.

Common Injuries and First Steps

  • Ankle sprains and ligament injuries
  • Meniscus tears and cartilage lesions
  • Anterior cruciate ligament rupture
  • Shoulder dislocation and instability
  • Achilles and other tendon injuries
  • Muscle strains

In the first 48 hours, activity is stopped, the limb is elevated, cold is applied and loading is limited. Persistent swelling, an inability to bear weight or a feeling that the joint gives way should be assessed without delay.

Return to Sport

Treatment may be non-surgical or surgical, but in both cases rehabilitation determines the outcome. Return to sport is not based on the calendar alone: strength symmetry between limbs, hop and balance tests and the athlete's confidence are evaluated together.

Returning too early increases the risk of re-injury. The programme is progressed in stages: range of motion, strength, coordination, then change of direction and jumping.

When Should You See a Doctor?

If you felt a snap during sport, if swelling developed rapidly or if your joint feels unstable, seek assessment promptly.
