Partial (Unicompartmental) Knee Replacement
Replacing only the damaged compartment of the knee while preserving healthy tissue.
In partial knee replacement, only the worn compartment of the knee is resurfaced while the healthy cartilage and ligaments are preserved. Because less bone is removed and the ligaments are kept intact, the knee often feels more natural and recovery tends to be faster than after total replacement.
Who Is Suitable?
- Osteoarthritis limited to a single compartment of the knee
- Intact cruciate ligaments and good range of motion
- No significant deformity of leg alignment
- Absence of widespread inflammatory joint disease
Suitability is confirmed with weight-bearing X-rays, clinical examination and, when required, MRI.
Advantages and Follow-up
Compared with total knee replacement, the procedure involves a smaller incision, less bone resection and generally a shorter recovery. Patients often regain a more natural feeling of movement.
Long-term durability depends on correct patient selection and precise implant positioning. Regular follow-up is recommended; if the osteoarthritis progresses to other compartments over the years, conversion to a total replacement remains possible.
If your pain is confined to one side of the knee and non-surgical treatment no longer helps, ask whether partial replacement is an option for you.
