Knee replacement is a surgical treatment for patients whose daily life is significantly affected by advanced knee osteoarthritis. When medication, physiotherapy and other conservative approaches are no longer sufficient, the damaged joint surfaces are replaced with specially designed implants to restore mobility and quality of life.
When Is It Considered?
The decision is made individually, taking into account the patient's age, bone quality, degree of joint damage, pain level and expectations of daily life.
- Advanced knee osteoarthritis with persistent joint pain
- Marked difficulty walking and climbing stairs
- Pain continuing despite medication, injections and physiotherapy
- Deformity of the knee or a change in leg alignment
- Night pain that disturbs sleep
The Procedure and Recovery
The operation is usually performed under spinal or general anaesthesia. The damaged bone and cartilage surfaces are removed and replaced with components made of metal and polyethylene. Robotic systems may assist the surgeon during planning and precise placement.
Most patients stand and begin walking exercises on the first day after surgery. A large proportion return to their daily activities within 6–12 weeks. The rehabilitation programme is planned individually and followed up with regular check-ups.
