Trauma and Fracture Surgery

Emergency and planned surgical treatment of fractures, dislocations and soft-tissue injuries.

The aim of fracture treatment is to restore the anatomy of the bone, provide stable fixation and allow early movement. Whether a fracture is treated with a cast or surgically depends on its location, the degree of displacement, whether it involves a joint surface and the patient's general condition.

Treatment Principles

  • Fractures involving a joint surface are reduced and fixed as accurately as possible
  • Stable fixation allows early mobilisation and protects joint function
  • Soft-tissue condition determines the timing of surgery
  • Bone quality is assessed; osteoporosis is investigated where relevant

Plates and screws, intramedullary nails, wires or external fixators may be used depending on the fracture pattern.

Healing and Follow-up

Bone healing progresses through inflammation, soft callus formation, mineralisation and remodelling. Immobility of the fracture and good blood supply are the main determinants. Smoking, poor nutrition, diabetes and infection delay healing.

Follow-up X-rays confirm union. Rehabilitation begins as soon as fixation allows, so that joint stiffness and muscle loss are minimised.

When Should You See a Doctor?

After an injury, if you cannot bear weight, if there is visible deformity, or if pain and swelling persist, seek assessment promptly.
